14 maguey
(Sp. model spelled same [mayéi], of Taino origin)1) DARE: 1830. Another name for the agave plant. Both Blevins and Hendrick-son reference agave, Hendrickson noting that the term derives from the name of "the daughter of the legendary Cadmus who introduced the Greek alphabet." While many species make up the Agave genus, the most remarkable one is the so-called century plant (A. americana). According to legend, the plant earned its name because it only blooms once every one hundred years. However, it actually blooms any time after fifteen years, usually in twenty to thirty years. Both Blevins and Hendrickson state that the plant dies after blooming, but no Spanish source reaffirms this. According to the DRAE and Blevins, it is originally from Mexico (although introduced into Europe in the sixteenth century and naturalized on the Mediterranean coast). The agave, maguey, or century plant is a light green succulent with fleshy leaves and yellowish blooms. The leaves are similar in arrangement to a triangular pyramid or a rosette; the edges as well as the tips of the leaves are covered with sharp spines, and the plant may grow up to some twenty to twenty-three feet in height. This particular plant and related species are used as hedges or fences in dry, hot areas and they produce fiber (thread), alcoholic beverages (mescal, tequila and pulque), soaps, and foodstuffs. In Mexico, the term maguey is used much more frequently to refer to these same plants. The DARE notes that this name is limited to the Southwest and the Gulf states. Also known as amole, century plant, lechuguilla, mescal.2) New Mexico: 1899. A rope, such as a lasso, made from the fibers of a maguey plant. Santamaría and the DRAE concur with the first definition, but no Spanish source glosses the term as a kind of rope.Alternate forms: maguay, McGay (the latter is a folk etymology). -
15 campomoche
( campamocha [kampamót∫a]; of uncertain origin, probably from Nahuatl campa-mo-chan 'where your house is' via Spanish). California: 1919. Bentley references this term as an insect known as a 'praying mantis' ( Mantis religiosa), so called because its folded wings resemble a clerical garment and its front two legs resemble hands clasped in prayer. The insect is also known as the "praying insect," "devil's horse." The term campomoche is also applied to a smaller green or gray-colored insect with a sticklike body, sometimes called a "walking-stick." The walking-stick is difficult to distinguish from the plants that it inhabits, and it is said to be fatal to cattle when they ingest it along with grass. Islas confirms that the insect is poisonous and kills numerous cattle in Chihuahua, Mexico, when they accidentally eat it. Santamaría references campamocha as an orthopterous insect of the mantis family that deposits its eggs in a multicolored capsule that is also called a campamocha. He provides the genus and species Stagmomantis limbata. Cobos indicates that the campamocha is the common praying mantis. Islas and Cabrera describe a different insect that blends in with foliage because of its sticklike appearance. -
16 cholla
(Sp. model spelled same [t∫ója] 'head' or 'good judgment,' a popular and affective term of uncertain origin, perhaps from antiquated dialectal French cholle 'ball' < Frankish keula 'mace' [weapon])California: 1846.1) A common cactus, known for its long sharp spines that are so loosely attached to the plant that they seem to jump onto any person or thing that brushes them. Adams notes that the cactus can grow to up to eight feet; he indicates that the branches of the cactus, rather than the spines, are easily detached from the plant and seem to jump onto passersby. The OED defines cholla as one of several species of Opontia cacti. The DARE says that it is the prickly pear cactus. Santamaría glosses cholla as the common name used in northern Mexico for various native cacti of the same genus. He gives O. cholla and O. thurberi as examples. Cobos glosses it as the "buck-horn or cane cactus." Sobarzo describes the plant as a cactus with a vascular, pulpy stalk divided into sections about four inches in length and covered with very sharp spines. Its fruit is like that of the prickly pear, but quite small. It grows to a height of approximately four feet. Sobarzo suggests that the plant gets its name from the shape of its fruit. This variety of cactus is also commonly depicted in western films.Alternate form: choya. Also called jumping cholla, staghorn cholla, tree cholla, deer brush.2) The term also has figurative meanings in the Southwest. Smith notes that it may be a colloquial term for 'skull,' or it may refer to a dull or stupid person. No Spanish source references the latter meaning. -
17 guaco
(Sp. model spelled same [gwáko], of American Indian origin, perhaps from a native Caribbean or Nicaraguan language)1) New Mexico: 1844. According to the DARE, "the Rocky Mountain bee plant." Sources for the DARE give the family Capparidacae for one variety of this plant and the Latin name Cleome serrulata Pursh for another.2) An extract from the Rocky Mountain bee plant that is used as a black pigment for Pueblo pottery designs. The DRAE describes it as a composite plant with vinelike stalks from sixteen to twenty-two yards long; large oval-shaped leaves that have heart-shaped bases and pointed tips; and bell-shaped, noxious-smelling white flowers in groups of four. It is a liana native to intertropical America and its leaves, when boiled, are considered protection against venomous animal bites, intestinal obstructions, rheumatism, and cholera. Santamaría concurs with the definition provided by the DRAE and adds that guaca and huaco are alternate forms in Mexico. He also provides Mikania genoclada, M. guaco, M. houstonis, M. coriacea, M. repanda, M. angulata, M. aristolochya, and Eupatorium mikania as various genera and species for the plant. Cobos glosses guaco as either a stinkweed or a name for the Rocky Mountain bee plant, whose roots are used to make a black paint. -
18 sisal
(same [sisál], origin not found)A rope made from the fiber of the agave plant. Blevins indicates that it has been replaced in recent times by the popular Manila hemp rope. Spanish sources reference it as a resistent fiber obtained from various species of agave. They do not reference it as a type of rope. The English meaning is an example of metonymy.
